Encouraging sustainable travel and accessibility
We will work with the GM Mayor and other agencies to encourage active travel and alternatives to the care, such as walking cycling and public transport. We believe that only by having an affordable, clean, reliable and safe and accessible public transport system will significant numbers make the shift to this option. We will play a full part in the efforts made by the GM Mayor to achieve this, to engage, motivate and empower communities.
The launch of the publicly controlled Bee Network along with the £2 fair cap has led to a large lift in patronage and customer satisfaction. The new Bolton Transport Committee is the conduit for public engagement, for better planned bus services.
Daisy Hill Train Station is now fully accessible to all people, with the aim of increasing fully accessible stations to over 50% in 3 years across GM.
Labour will be a strong voice for public transport users to prevent the appalling train journeys of the past for borough residents and we will maximise the benefits to Bolton as a result of Mayor Burnham’s innovative bus reforms, so that more people can get reliable and affordable buses for work, education and leisure journeys.
In addition to the launch of the Bee Network for buses, local train services will be added to this. The new Bolton Transport Committee will be a voice for local public transport users.
We do not believe that charging car owners is ever the solution to getting older polluting cars off our roads, and instead believe that generous government grant schemes for vehicle scrappage or upgrade is always the solution to achieve cleaner air.
This is the stated policy of the Labour Group, which we are committed to.
Walking routes and cycling must be safe, well-lit and clean and a Labour Council will invest in improving well used routes. We will aim to promote safe and convenient cycling routes with the same high standards.
The council continues to invest in cycling infrastructure, using dedicated grants. Major project to improve town centre lighting to improve safety. New GM money to be utilised for maintenance of bus, waking and cycling routes.
