Civic Pride, social responsibility and town twinning
For civic pride, Special projects have been initiated in Bolton town centre such as repainting Churchgate Cross, fixing the station clock, fixing the engine at Oxford Street, illuminating the war memorial. We plan to illuminate all war memorials across the borough, and install a mill workers art feature at the train station in Bolton.
The Council on a regular basis may need to give short term support to a local business to protect jobs during a cash flow problem. We believe that this is the right thing to do, but businesses who are helped should give something back. Any, and all assistance should rightly face audit and due diligence with internal processes before any help is agreed.
This is a statement of intent that will be tested when the opportunity arises.
We would strongly encourage these businesses to fully engage in the civic life of the borough, for example by supporting the Mayor’s Charity or sponsoring events.
House building companies and others have become more involved in sponsorship of Mayoral Events and festivals.
We need to do more as a Council to recognise the unsung individuals and organisations who have done so much for the Bolton family. Labour will reinstate the Civic Medal in recognition of the people and organisations of the borough who make an outstanding contribution. All potential recipients of the awards would be decided by an independent panel chaired by the Mayor.
Civic medal reinstated with the first 4 recipients being awarded
Will we strengthen the links between Bolton (including our local borough towns) and our twin towns, in particular the strengthening of links between schools, youth groups and voluntary organisations.
It is our stated intent to continue to encourage international understanding, cooperation and friendship agreements, especially through schools and youth organisations.
