Bolton Stands United Against Hate Crime
Bolton is taking a firm stand against hate crime, as the Labour-led council joins forces with partners for Hate Crime Awareness Week (HCAW). This week-long programme of events and activities aims to raise awareness, encourage reporting, and make it clear that hate has no place in our town.
This year’s campaign follows the launch of the Greater Manchester Hate Crime Action Plan in October 2024, reinforcing our commitment to tackling hate in all its forms.
What is Hate Crime?
Hate crime is any crime or incident motivated by prejudice or hatred, targeting someone because of their:
🔴 Race, colour, or ethnic origin
🔴 Nationality or national origin
🔴 Religion, faith, or belief
🔴 Gender or gender identity
🔴 Sexuality or sexual orientation
🔴 Disability
🔴 Lifestyle or dress
Hate incidents can take many forms, including:
⚠️ Threats or physical attacks
⚠️ Verbal abuse, bullying, or intimidation
⚠️ Inciting hate, including graffiti, fly-posters, or social media abuse
It’s important to remember that violence is not the only form of hate crime—verbal abuse, threats, or discrimination can be just as harmful and are taken just as seriously.
A Community United Against Hate
The Labour-led Bolton Council has made tackling hate crime a top priority, ensuring that everyone feels safe, respected, and supported. HCAW events will include workshops, creative sessions, sports activities, and drop-in sessions, bringing people together to stand up against discrimination.
Cllr Rabiya Jiva, Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said:
“There is no place for hate in Bolton, and I am committed to raising awareness and encouraging victims to come forward and report these hideous crimes.
“We want people to feel confident in reporting incidents, to help them seek justice and prevent incidents from happening to others.
“All reports will be investigated by Greater Manchester Police, and perpetrators will be held to account.
“The more we know, the better we can respond and put the right support in place.”
How to Report Hate Crime
If you or someone you know has been a victim of hate crime, it is important to report it. Every report helps tackle hate crime in our communities and ensures that support is available for those affected.
