Bolton Celebrates its Sporting Legacy with New Reebok Heritage Documentary

Bolton’s proud sporting history is set to take centre stage with an exciting new documentary celebrating the town’s unique role in shaping the global sportswear giant, Reebok. The Reebok Heritage Project is bringing together local historians, filmmakers, and former industry insiders to explore the company’s origins and its journey from a small Bolton-based family business to an internationally recognised brand.

Thanks to the collaboration between Bolton Museum and Broaden Films, this project will highlight the incredible legacy of Joseph William Foster, whose innovative approach to athletic footwear laid the foundation for Reebok’s success. From crafting the first spiked running shoes for Bolton United Harriers to supplying footwear for the 1924 British Olympic Team, Foster’s work helped revolutionise the world of sports footwear. His pioneering spirit continued through the decades, culminating in Reebok’s global rise in the 1980s.

A Story Rooted in Bolton’s Heritage

This documentary will delve into the company’s evolution, showcasing how Reebok was shaped by Bolton’s entrepreneurial spirit and deep sporting culture. The film will also explore links to another local footwear manufacturer, Norman Walsh Footwear, whose legacy continues today. With a mix of historical footage, interviews, and expert insights, the documentary aims to bring to life the remarkable story of how Bolton became a hub for innovative sportswear design.

Recently, Joe Foster, the grandson of the company’s founder, returned to Bolton to contribute to the project, sharing his firsthand experiences of growing the brand into a global success. He was joined by Dave Singleton, a former senior vice president at Reebok, who played a key role in the company’s expansion into the U.S. market.

An Exciting Exhibition for Bolton

The completed documentary will premiere at a special exhibition at Bolton Museum in July 2025, offering residents and visitors a unique glimpse into the town’s contribution to sports and fashion history. The exhibition will feature:
